The Beauty of Inner Housekeeping

I remember back in the early 2000’s when blogs became a thing. What once lived in the pages of private journals suddenly spilled out into the world — shared for strangers to read. And it was captivating.
Maybe it was captivating because we like to peek into the windows of other people’s lives. Or maybe it’s because sometimes it’s easier to recognize the story in someone else than it is to sit still and feel our own. We are reflections for each other in this way — mirrors of what it means to be human.
But here’s the invitation: what if we could turn that same lens inward? What if the curiosity we hold for other people’s stories became the same curiosity we bring to our own inner workings — to the truth and stories living quietly inside of us?
When we tenderly open to our own truth, we gently open the door for others to do the same.
But now, in this world of curated social feeds, the path seems to have bent away from truth. The truth of being human. The truth of imperfection. Maybe some don’t want to look at what’s really going on beneath the surface. Maybe the pressure to appear polished, together, and perfect has grown louder than the quiet beauty of being raw, messy, honest, and real.
And when we don’t share our stories? We can feel alone in what we’re feeling inside.
Does everyone else feel insecure?
Does everyone else silently wrestle with their body image?
Does everyone else tuck away their grief, their struggles, their longings… behind an Amazon purchase and a smile?
The more I hold space for myself and for others, the more I notice that refreshing exhale of truth. The relief of hearing: you’re not alone.
We are all growing through something.
It’s like your house — it always needs attention. There’s always something to purge, dust, rearrange, donate, or appreciate. Our lives are the same. There is always something to tend to: something to grieve, something to celebrate, something to sit with, something to clear.
And just like you clean something every single day — brushing your teeth, maybe taking a shower — the same is true for your energetic “house.” Daily upkeep matters.
Some of my favorite energy practices are breathwork, visual meditations, voice notes with friends (better than therapy), journaling, going to the gym, taking a nap, sitting in the sun, going for a sunset walk (sunrise is too early for me!), or simply enjoying my morning coffee.
So find what brings you back to center. Find what makes your house feel like a home. And remember to do it every day.
Because our energetic self is not a “one and done.” It’s a practice of upkeep. Of finding ourselves asking, “Where the hell did this come from?” — and then deciding whether it needs to be cleaned, donated, or placed back gently on the shelf.
As we step into autumn, the energy asks us to carve out deliberate time for this kind of inner housekeeping. Just as the trees let go of their leaves, maybe we’re being asked to let go of our own.
This is being human. Not “social media perfect.” Just real, raw, alive. Constantly growing, shifting, purging, clearing, celebrating, and — most importantly — resting in the beauty of it all.
